Lucien B. Smith of Kent, Ohio, patented barbed wire (or barb wire). Barbed wire is a fencing wire with sharp edges that form an artificial “thorn hedge” at intervals along the fence line.
The new device worked to restrain cattle and human trespassers and is widely used in the security perimeter fence.
