The US Massive Ground Stop on Jan 11 in 200 Words

Jan 11, 2023

Thousands of domestic flights were delayed or canceled across the United States.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it was caused by a computer outage (pre-flight information system).

Flights resumed at RDU at 9:22 a.m., but the ripple effect lingered through the day, leading to more than 1,300 flight cancellations and 9,000 delays.

U.S. Department of Transportation (the DOT) and the FBI investigations have found no evidence of foul play or cyberattack.

“We’ll respond at that time. Aircraft can still land safely, just not take off right now. We don’t know what the cause of it is.” – Reuters quoted Joe Biden as saying when asked about the incident.

Update on Jan 12

According to FAA advisories, the NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) system failed at 8:28 p.m. Tuesday, preventing new or amended notices from being distributed to pilots.

The reboot of the system, which theoretically takes about 90 minutes, failed to come back online before the rush hour began on Wednesday (Jan 11.)

“Security Incidents in 200 words Series”
In an era where 10 minutes are called long term, 30 minutes feel like forever, and no one has the patience to read anything longer than 2 minutes, we try to summarize any incident in less than 200 words – because who has time?
